Being green and staying green with multiples is a topic that is at forefront of our minds these days, and is also a question we get asked on a regular basis. Obviously, having a larger family means we have a larger footprint on this earth. But there are many ways in which we can reduce our impact on the planet. Here are some of our green ways (not an exhaustive list - I'm sure I am forgetting stuff):
-We buy local and/ or organic foods as much as possible;
- we've reduced our meat consumption dramatically, we use meat as an accompaniement rather than as a main course;
- we use public transportation for our commutes;
- we keep the thermostat in our house set at a lower temperature in the winter and higher in the summer;
- we line-dry our laundry (weather permitting);
- we recycle religiously;
- we freecycle;
- we have high efficiency appliances;
- we use chemical-free cleaning products;
- we use chemical-free personal care products;
- we favor the use of bar soap over shower gel (less plastic packaging, easier to recycle);
- we consume mindfully and shop consignment when we can;
- we avoid products with excess packaging as much as we can;
- we look for organic cottons (towels, sheets, bedding, clothing);
- we do not use pesticides;
- we're continuously looking for ways to be greener!
Our next purchase this spring will be some rain water barrels - which I am very excited about!
